Andy Warhol is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of American “pop art”, which draws on themes from popular mass culture, such as comic books, advertising, and everyday objects - a Campbell’s Soup Can for example!
Some of Warhol’s more experimental works were his “oxidisation paintings”. These were paintings made with special copper paint that changed colour when it came into contact with urine. While some people marvelled over these images, they are certainly not everybody’s cup of wee tea.
Warhol also gave his pop art treatment to many celebrity portraits, including Marilyn Monroe and Che Guvara. We’re sure he would have approved of his own motifo makeover.

‘The Scream’ by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch is not just one, but a series of four similar paintings plus a lithograph. The image depicted by Munch resembles a male clutching the sides of his head, as if being subjected to an endless barrage of thrash metal music.
The numerous versions of The Scream may also help to explain why it seems to get stolen more often than any other famous artwork, with each theft serving to boost the popularity of the image.
The face of The Scream was also the inspiration for a series of slasher-style horror films (Scream 1, 2, 3…, Scary Movie, etc.). The general plot in all these movies involved a hooded figure running round in a Scream-style mask, wielding a carving knife. Look-a-like masks soon appeared in costume shops worldwide to satisfy the huge demand of children wishing to dress up as psychopathic killers at parties.

Probably the most famous and controversial portrait of all time is Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”. That enigmatic smile has been subject to untold scrutiny, and there are numerous theories as to who posed for the painting, including Da Vinci himself. In recent times, the fictitious book “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown has re-ignited interest in the painting, with some people taking the novel just a little too seriously.
